Exchange Server
2007 creates a default Global Address List (GAL) during installation.
This GAL is a collection of all mailbox-enabled users, mail-enabled
users, mail-enabled public folders, mail-enabled contacts, mail-enabled groups, dynamic distribution groups, and system mailboxes of your organization.
Sometimes requirement comes to create a new GAL. Exchange Server 2007 supports creating new GAL, but this can only be done from Exchange Management Shell (PowerShell), not from the Exchange Management Console (EMC). We can create, modify, update and remove GAL only from the PowerShell.
We can create
as many GAL as many as we wish. But only one GAL will be displayed to
the client as Global Address list, but not with the same name as you
created it.
If a user belongs to multiple GAL, only that GAL will be displayed that contains more entries.
