How to Secure Unified Messaging in the Exchange Server 2007

Securing unified messaging environment in an organization is as much critical as other Exchange 2007 roles. There are different areas where unified messaging environment can be protected. These are:-
1.  Securing traffic
2. Applying security on PIN, and
3. Unified Messaging Permissions
How to Secure Unified Messaging Traffic
·  Use TLS/IPSec for securing network traffic
·  Use digital certificates for verifying the identity of a user/computer.
·  Use VoIP security for IP Gateways or PBXs, like UM dial plans.
How to Apply Security on UM PIN
We can use the below PIN settings for securing mailboxes:-
·  Set the maximum number of logon attempts after that user mailbox will be locked out.
·  Restrict the users from using common PIN patterns, like abcdef, or 123456.
·  Set the minimum numbers of digits required for a PIN.
· Set the days that PIN will be accepted by the UM.
· Set the number of PIN histories that the system will remember and users can't repeat them.
Unified Messaging Permissions
You can assign permission for managing UM, and creating/deleting recipients. You can also use split permissions for managing Active Directory and Exchange organization by different administrators.
