Message Flow in Exchange Server 2007

Message routing is performed by Hub Transport servers using the Active Directory sites and site links. Message routing is significantly less complex in Exchange server 2007. Hub Transport server is responsible for message routing within a site and between sites.
Hub Transport server deliver the messages if that message is sent by two recipients belonging to the same server.
  1. User Submits message on the Mailbox Server
  2. Mailbox Server notifies Hub Transport server in its active directory site that message is awaiting pickup.
  3. Hub Transport server picks up the message from the originating mailbox server.
  4. Hub Transport server perform query against Active directory about the recipient mailbox server.
  5. Hub Transport server calculates the lowest-cost route to the site containing the destination mailbox store.
  6. Hub Transport server send the message to the destination mailbox server.
  7. If multiple sites must be crossed, the message is delivered to the Hub Transport server along the path.
  8. If destination site have no Hub Transport server to the closed Hub Transport server where the destination mailbox server resides.
  9. When message reaches in the destination site, that Hub Transport server takes responsibilities to deliver the message to the appropriate Mailbox server.
